The Elephant Man: The Stage Play

The 1980 US/Canadian television co-production of Bernard Pomerance's play with Philip Anglim as John Merrick.

Here's what I reckon is probably the definitive documentary about the amazing and sad story of The Elephant Man. QED: The True Story Of Joseph Merrick, The Elephant Man .. QED documentary, first aired on BBC in 1997. Using exclusive access to Joseph Merrick's case history and medical notes, this programme traces the story of the so-called Elephant Man's life, from his birth in Leicester to his premature death in the London Hospital. "The Elephant Man". For the Jamaican missionary, see Joseph Merrick (missionary) . Joseph Merrick Joseph Merrick carte de visite photo, c. 1889.jpg Joseph Merrick photographed, c. 1889 Born Joseph Carey Merrick 5 August 1862 Leicester, Leicestershire, England Died 11 April 1890 (aged 27) The London Hospital, Whitechapel, London, England Other names "Elephant Man", John Merrick Joseph Carey Merrick (5 August 1862 – 11 April 1890), sometimes incorrectly referred to as John Merrick, was an English man with severe deformities who was exhibited as a human curiosity named the Elephant Man. He became well known in London society after he went to live at the London Hospital. Merrick was born in Leicester, Leicestershire and began to develop abnormally during the first few years of his life. His skin appeared thick and lumpy, he developed enlarged lips, and a bony lump grew on his forehead. One of his arms and both of his feet became enlarged and at some point during his childhood he fell and damaged his hip, resulting in permanent lameness. When he was 10, his mother died, and his father soon remarried. Merrick left school at 13 and had difficulty finding employment. Rejected by his father and stepmother, he left home. In late 1879, Merrick, aged 17, entered the Leicester Union Workhouse. In 1884, after four years in the workhouse, Merrick contacted a showman named Sam Torr and proposed that Torr should exhibit him. Torr agreed and arranged for a group of men to manage Merrick, whom they named the Elephant Man. After touring the East Midlands, Merrick traveled to London to be exhibited in a penny gaff shop on Whitechapel Road which was rented by showman Tom Norman. Norman's shop, directly across the street from the London Hospital, was visited by a surgeon named Frederick Treves, who invited Merrick to be examined and photographed. Soon after Merrick's visits to the hospital, Tom Norman's shop was closed by the police, and Merrick's managers sent him to tour in Europe. In Belgium, Merrick was robbed by his road manager and abandoned in Brussels. He eventually made his way back to London; unable to communicate, he was found by the police to have Dr. Treves's card on him. Treves came and took Merrick back to the London Hospital. Although his condition was incurable, Merrick was allowed to stay at the hospital for the remainder of his life. Treves visited him daily, and the pair developed quite a close friendship. Merrick also received visits from the wealthy ladies and gentlemen of London society, including Alexandra, Princess of Wales. Aged 27, Merrick died on 11 April 1890. The official cause of death was asphyxia, although Treves, who dissected the body, said that Merrick had died of a dislocated neck. He believed that Merrick—who had to sleep sitting up because of the weight of his head—had been attempting to sleep lying down, to "be like other people". The exact cause of Merrick's deformities is unclear. The dominant theory throughout much of the 20th century was that Merrick suffered from neurofibromatosis type I. In 1986, a new theory emerged that he had Proteus syndrome. In 2001, it was proposed that Merrick had suffered from a combination of neurofibromatosis type I and Proteus syndrome. DNA tests conducted on his hair and bones have proven inconclusive. In 1979, Bernard Pomerance's play about Merrick called The Elephant Man debuted, and David Lynch's film, also called The Elephant Man, was released the following year. In late 2014 and early 2015, Bradley Cooper starred in a Broadway revival of The Elephant Man, directed by Scott Ellis.

On screen, Bradley Cooper stars in the new movie "American Sniper." On stage, he's the lead in a revival of "The Elephant Man." Cooper talks to "CBS This Morning" co-host Charlie Rose about his two projects and how "American Sniper" was his most challenging film yet.

Comfort (2016): A late night courier boy agrees to pick up the feisty daughter of an important client. The two youngsters form a close connection and spend two nights exploring LA's local food scene while their romance blossoms. Director: William Lu Writer: William Lu Stars: Julie Zhan, Kevin Ashworth, Michael Boucher, Michael Bow Country: USA Language: English Release Date: 5 March 2016 (USA) Filming Locations: Nvisionate Studios, Van Nuys, California, USA User Review ( "For everyone who is done with watching nightly escapades and immoral, provocative love, this tender movie is a tip. See the true romance, close by. Completed with a little humor and a bit of immersion. Courier Cameron (Chris Dinh) has to pick up one of his clients daughter of the airport: Jasmine (Julie Zhan). He is immediately charmed by her. And what does a crushing man do in a tender film? He does not actively open the hunt, no he buys a purple cuddle pony of one hundred dollars. Dating 2.0. To see, or not to see? Comfort is a bit different than you are used to from the average romantic movie. Two adults who interact with each other in an extremely correct way. No l*st and wild behavior, but politeness and sincerity. I found it a nice movie, but there are some clichés in it and sometimes it's all too unrealistic and predictable. The bravery can sometimes be boring. Particularly see this movie if you are in the mood for something sweet and do not mind that the film is mainly about dialogue. The quality is good, so I still recommended it." With the help of kindly Dr. Frederick Treves, Merrick attempts to regain the dignity he lost after years spent as a side-show freak. All the human spirit needs to a chance. In one of his most legendary films, director David Lynch chronicles the intense emotional journey of a complex, lonely man and the dedicated surgeon who changed his life. John Merrick (John Hurt) was born with a horribly disfiguring congenital disease, and suffered the humiliation of being a sideshow freak. Only when London doctor Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins, SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, RED DRAGON) rescues him does Merrick begin to regain the life of dignity and respect that everyone deserves. Based on a true story, the critically acclaimed, Oscar®-nominated film has earned its place in cinematic history. Anne Bancroft, John Gielgud and Wendy Hiller lend moving performances to an already powerful story. Visually fascinating and historically relevant, Lynch has created a haunting masterpiece of compassion, beauty and ultimately, humanity.

Nothing unusual was recorded about the birth of Joseph Carey Merrick on August 5, 1862 — to the world better known as the Elephant Man. Only a few months before turning two, the first symptoms were there: some strange swelling appeared on the baby’s lips, and his skin started to change. Over time, the conditions only worsened. Joseph grew up a boy who slowly came to embody a human monster... Subscribe to The Story Behind Music by Epidemic Sound:

Joseph Merrick, aka The Elephant Man, was born on August 5, 1862 in Leicester, England, and he was born a completely healthy child with absolutely no indication that anything was, or would be wrong. There are differing accounts of exactly when Joseph’s disfigurements started to appear, but general consensus is that they didn’t become severe until he was about 5 years old. However he was affected by the disease before his fifth birthday. Accounts state that as early as 21 months, he began developing a swelling of his lips, followed by a bony lump on his forehead, which later grew, of course, to roughly resemble an elephant’s trunk. Merrick's condition gradually deteriorated during his final years, which were spent at London Hospital. He required a great deal of care from the nursing staff and spent much of his time in bed. His facial deformities continued to grow and his head became more and more dangerously enlarged. He died on April 11th 1890, at the age of 27. Merrick had to sleep sitting up with his head resting on his knees because of the size of his skull. It’s believed that he died just trying to lay down and go to sleep like everyone else. Treves, who performed the autopsy concluded that Merrick had died of a dislocated neck. To this day, Merrick’s exact medical condition remains unknown.

I watched this on VHS as a young boy and thoroughly enjoyed this version of HEIDI. Looking for a DVD of this proved a complete waste of time so I gave up on ever watching it again. My mum was not so easily dissuaded! She dug out the old VHS from the attic, got it cleaned (thoroughly!) and had it copied to dvd, which I have now ripped onto the computer, and uploaded in the hopes that others who may wish to see this again can do so. I understand there is a copyright on this production, but please understand that there is no way to access this production for purchase or viewing and I merely want to share something I found to be truly wonderful :) Sorry that some of it is a bit out of whack - we got it cleaned, but it was very moldy! The fact that any of it was good is a miracle! Enjoy!

Here's a little trailer I put together in a video editing class a few years ago. I used music by Howard Shore from his Fellowship of the Ring soundtrack: track number 13 - The Bridge of Khazad Dum - 4:45 on the time-code. This poem was left in one of the comments for this trailer by @SwapMeetFlea - "'Tis true my form is something odd, But blaming me is blaming God; Could I create myself anew I would not fail in pleasing you." --This is a rhyme used in Merrick's sideshow pamphlet, and which he is said to have often quoted, followed by these lines by Isaac Watts: "If I could reach from pole to pole Or grasp the ocean with a span, I would be measured by the soul; The mind's the standard of the man."

Ruth Epstein and John Rubin attempt to understand how the Elephant Man's speech was formed by studying Joseph Merrick's bone structure and applying the same constraints to an actor. For more info:- Subscribe! Follow Discovery on Twitter

(a.k.a. "The Boss") This 2000 gem of a series stars Jim Broadbent as Peter Duffley, a wonderfully inept branch manager of a small British bank. As far as I know, this has never been released commercially on VHS or DVD. It's worth watching for Broadbent's performance alone, but there are many fine supporting characters throughout. Who hasn't worked for a boss like this at least once in their working life? I suspect David Brent is Peter Duffley's love child.

Richard Burton, Maurice Evans, Lee Remick & Roddy McDowall star in this 1960 television production of Shakespeare's classic.
